In the late 1800's, young Lise joins her father on an expedition from Paris to Africa. After nearly two years of adventure, she is captured by a band of the Dervish fleeing Kitchener's army. She is rescued and returns to Europe, where she marries her rescuer, Major Havelock. 

 

Lise adjusts to her new life at Woodbine, her husband's family home in Ireland, and settles into a plesent routine in the village of Killynann. However, with the outbreak of World War I, and Ireland in rebellion, what joy and tragedy await the Havelock family?

 

A sweeping saga, skillfully weaving history with unforgettable characters across decades and continents.
